Blueberries

Do you eat blueberries?!  If not, you definitely should!  Did you know that they have higher levels of antioxidants than any other fruit?!!  Antioxidants are those free radical fighting powerhouses that are MEGA good for us!  Because of these antioxidants, blueberries are an immune builder and infection fighter! One cup of blueberries deliver 14% of the recommended daily dose of fiber, almost a quarter of the recommended daily intake of vitamin C and has fewer than 100 calories!!!   A diet rich in blueberries are beneficial in so many ways.  Here are just a few:
  • Help lower blood cholesterol levels while improving glucose control and insulin sensitivity, both of which lower the risk of heart disease and diabetes.
  • Aid in reducing belly fat.
  • Help promote urinary tract health.
  • Help preserve vision.
  • Help prevent degeneration of brain cell and restore healthy central nervous system.
  • Help prevent constipation and aid overall digestion.
  • Help prevent and cure certain cancers such as colon and liver cancer.
  • Increase overall mood.
Blueberries are in peak season in July. July is actually National Blueberry Month! But you don’t have to wait until then to enjoy these super fruits! Here are some tips on how to buy the best blueberries.

  • Choose berries that are deep in color. The deeper the color the more antioxidants and medicinal value they have.
  • Berries should be firm and have a uniform hue with a whitish bloom.
  • Shake the container before you buy them. Choose berries that can move freely. If they are unable to move this can indicate they are soft, damaged or moldy.
  • Avoid berries that are soft and watery in texture. They should be free from moisture since water will cause the berries to decay.
  • When buying frozen berries shake the bag gently to see if they move freely. Not moving or being clumped together could indicate they’ve been thawed and refrozen.
There are TONS of ways to eat blueberries.  You can add them to all kinds of desserts or breakfast pastries.  But they can also be enjoyed as a snack or a juice!   Here are just a few recipes to enjoy!
